Happy NEW SCIENCE Friday!
The highlights: See what's new in the studio, meet Emmanuella Nnuji-John, and of course a science comic!
Women in STEM quote notecards
We just created this new series that features prominent women in STEM. The notecard set features quotes from or about each person: It's the perfect way to send words of encouragement to your favorite trailblazer, or to let them know they're doing great!
New projects from this week!

Meet Emmanuella Nnuji-John
Emmanuella Nnuji-John (@dumebi.sci) is an undergraduate biochemistry student at Alcorn State University researching novel techniques to eliminate sweet-potato viruses. Sweet-potato viruses cause cultivar decline and crop yield loss and are one major limitation to sweet-potato production.
Emmanuella's research focuses on detecting these viruses through DNA and RNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and then eliminating them using a combination treatment of meristem tip tissue-culture and thermotherapy. After the treatment, the viruses are retested for to ensure total elimination before planting on the field.
Her work aims to establish a widely accepted virus removal program for the benefit of local agricultural communities. Beyond the laboratory, Emmanuella strives to strike a balance between coursework and science communication. With her love for scientific story telling, she hopes to bridge the gap between scientists and the public while inspiring others, especially women of color, to find their voices.
