Today was the official opening of Because Science- our science gift shop Vienna, VA!
We still love craft fairs and online orders, but we now get to share our passion for creating & curating gifts, jewelry and custom art for your inner scientist everyday and in-person.
Our store is located at 2764D Avenir Place Vienna, VA 22108, one block away from the Dunn Loring metro stop. We're open from 11a-8p everyday.

Meet Kenya Murray

"Dearest Daughter of the Dust,
There is no box that can or ever will contain you.
I’ve never had a Black epidemiology teacher and today, I gave my first in-person lecture within the Global Health Institute as an infectious disease epidemiologist. No slides.. just pictures and storytelling. I’ve long recognized that much of my existence in this space will be an act of not being confined to the expectations of who they want to see teaching and leading in this field. As I continue to add to the collective work of transforming the conditions in which public health professionals are educated, poetry has become one of my greatest sources of wisdom.
To me, poems are like biblical scripture. My mama would surely roll her eyes at my saying this but in my deepest hour of need, I’m sometimes thinking of a line from a poem to feed me... and to be honest ‘The Negro Speaks of Rivers’ has always rolled off my tongue faster than scripture. (And even still Mama..I promise my help cometh from Lord).
Lucille Clifton gifted me with what I call one of my life poems. I recite this before every speaking engagement as a reminder that I.. in blackness and woman body will forever prevail as I show up as none other than myself.
