Meet Wendy A. Okolo, Ph.D.
From Wendy:
"I’ve said and written the word “cockpit” many times over the past 16 years (since my freshman year of aerospace engineering). Never thought about it much. But now an advisory committee is recommending that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) “replace words and phrases such as “cockpit,” “unmanned aviation” and “man-made” with gender-neutral terms such as “flight deck,” “uncrewed aviation” and “machine-made,” to create a more welcoming environment.” I think that’s fabulous!
So I’m on a panel today moderated by the FAA deputy administrator, Bradley Mims (who was appointed by Biden so no pressure Wendy) and someone from the US Secret Service (again no pressure) at the Inclusive Language Summit today at 10am ET. This event will be live-streamed and open to the public (pls swipe left for details to participate).
I also took a cursory glance at what the aviation community thinks about this initiative and it’s not all positive. Some think the FAA is trying to be “woke” and to leave “wokeness” out of aviation and aerospace. 😩😂 I think change is hard but I also think change is necessary. They are not mutually exclusive 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️"
