Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon dioxide that is second only to feldspar in abundance in the Earth's crust. It is known for its hardness (7.0 on the Mohs scale), which makes it suitable for use in jewelry and as a component in many manufactured goods. Many varieties of quartz exist, with colors ranging from colorless (rock crystal) to purple (amethyst) or pink (rose quartz), depending on the presence of trace impurities.
