Do you dream about time-traveling space wizards? Telepathic aliens? Or intergalactic spaceship battles? Then Sci-Fi story writing workshop is for you!

Open to all writers, readers, storytellers, daydreamers who would like to begin – or have already begun - writing their own science fiction story. (Best for 10–16 year-olds)

Each 90-minute session will consist of:

•            Introductory teaching about story-craft elements (such as: writing dialogue, developing believable characters, world building, planning well-structured plot)

•            Free writing time (including 1-1 feedback and support with the writing tutor)

•            Sharing and critiquing of each other’s work

In addition to creating their very own science fiction story, your young writer will learn to:

•            Empower their creative voice and gain artistic ownership

•            Expand imagination and empathy

•            Improve planning and structured thinking

•            Learn to critique and offer constructive criticism

•            Discover individual written style and voice

•            Sharpen writing skills to create tension and hold reader attention

MEET THE TUTOR:

Laura is a writer and teacher from the UK. She has over 10 years of experience of working with elementary and middle-school aged students, specializing in literacy/language development and creative writing teaching. Currently, Laura is working on a fantasy novel inspired by Scottish mythology with themes of colonialism and climate change.

Getting Here & What to Expect:
All events take place inside the Craft Lab at Because Science, our retail shop located at 1759 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC (across from the Line Hotel in Adams Morgan).

 Look for the squiggly rainbow mural! Enter Because Science and walk to the back of the store (between the biology and anatomy sections) to find the entrance to the Craft Lab
 Metro: We're a 10-minute walk from the Woodley Park (red line) or Columbia Heights (green line) Metro stations.
 Bus: The 42, 43, and 90/92 buses stop nearby.
 Parking: Street parking is mostly limited to 30 minutes—walking, biking, or ride share is recommended. There is a parking garage located at 2421 18th St NW, about a block away.
